A Wedding Venue on a Different Scale

The InterContinental London – The O2 is one of those venues where wedding transport can become part of the occasion rather than simply a journey to the door. We know it particularly for large Indian and wider Asian weddings, although it hosts weddings of many different sizes and styles.

The scale explains why. The hotel’s event complex includes the huge pillar-free Arora Ballroom, which can accommodate around 3,000 guests, as well as the Peninsula Ballroom for around 1,700. For a family planning a celebration with several hundred guests, multiple suppliers and a substantial bridal party, the venue has the space and infrastructure to make that feel natural rather than oversized.

For us as wedding-car operators, that changes the job. We may be coordinating a Phantom for the bride, another car for the groom, an 8-seat Baby Bentley limousine for bridesmaids or close family and a 16-seat Hummer for a larger group. Getting those vehicles to arrive in the right order can matter just as much as choosing them.

The Arrival Is Part of the Wedding

One of the things we particularly like about working at the InterContinental is the amount of usable space around the hotel. Unlike some central London venues where the wedding car has to arrive, unload and move almost immediately, there is room here to create a much more deliberate entrance.

From our own experience at the venue, there is parking for roughly 150 cars across the ground-level and underground parking areas. More importantly for the wedding itself, there is useful space outside the hotel for cars to arrive, be positioned and, when the day allows, brought together for photographs.

That is particularly effective with a multi-car booking. A white Phantom or Ghost at the front with a Baby Bentley limousine or Hummer behind it can look spectacular when the vehicles are lined up properly rather than scattered around a busy road.

We still plan the arrival around the venue’s instructions on the day. Large weddings can have coaches, suppliers, family cars and other wedding vehicles arriving at similar times, so space does not mean timings can be ignored.

Large Indian & Asian Weddings at the InterContinental O2

This is one of the Greenwich venues where our longer wedding packages genuinely come into their own. A large Indian or Asian wedding can involve much more than collecting the bride and driving her to the hotel.

There may be separate bride and groom collections, family members leaving from different addresses, several wedding vehicles, a longer ceremony, photographs and a return or onward journey later in the day. The Arora Ballroom is built for celebrations on this scale, and the hotel is experienced in hosting large cultural weddings.

That does not mean every Asian wedding needs ten hours of car hire. Some couples are already staying at the hotel and only want a special arrival; others need the vehicles committed for most of the day. We would rather see the actual itinerary and recommend six, eight or ten hours only when the schedule justifies it.

The same applies to the number of cars. A large ballroom does not mean you automatically need a fleet. We work out who genuinely needs transporting, from where, and at what time.

Catering & Cultural Requirements

For large Indian and Asian weddings, catering can be as important as the ballroom itself. The InterContinental has its own catering operation and also works with a recommended or preferred catering framework for events. Specialist venue listings currently identify Asian, halal and kosher catering capability and a recommended-caterer arrangement.

Our advice is not to assume that a particular outside caterer will automatically be accepted. If you have a preferred Indian, Asian, halal, kosher or specialist caterer, speak to the hotel’s wedding and events team early. In our experience the hotel is very accommodating with large and culturally specific celebrations, but the couple should confirm the current catering arrangements directly with the venue before committing to a supplier.

This is especially worth doing early for a large wedding, where catering, production, décor and transport all have to work around the same access and event timetable.

A Brilliant Setting for Wedding-Car Photographs

The Greenwich Peninsula gives photographs here a very different character from the traditional Greenwich settings around Queen’s House or the Old Royal Naval College. The O2 is immediately beside the hotel, with the River Thames and Canary Wharf skyline forming part of the wider setting.

For couples who want a modern London wedding rather than a country-house look, it can be an exceptional backdrop. A Phantom or Ghost against the contemporary hotel and O2 setting feels very different from the same car outside Tudor Barn or Eltham Palace.

One simple thing we always recommend is deciding before the wedding whether photographs with the cars actually matter to you. On a large wedding day it is surprisingly easy for the bride and groom to arrive, everyone to become occupied with getting inside and the cars to leave before the photograph you had imagined has been taken.

If you want the Rolls-Royce on its own, a bride-and-car photograph or the whole vehicle line-up, tell us beforehand. We can build sensible photo time into the transport plan rather than trying to improvise it once hundreds of guests are arriving.

Planning a Multi-Car Arrival

Several wedding cars should not simply be told to arrive at exactly the same minute. A Phantom carrying two or three people loads differently from a 16-seat Hummer carrying a large family group. A limousine may also take longer to unload, particularly when passengers are wearing formal wedding clothes.

We therefore think about the order as well as the time. The bridal Rolls-Royce may need to be presented at the front; family vehicles may need to arrive first; or the bride and groom may be following completely separate schedules.

At a venue of this scale, a little coordination makes the difference between a collection of expensive cars outside a hotel and a proper wedding arrival.

Which Wedding Cars Work Well Here?

The Rolls-Royce Phantom and Ghost are natural choices for the main bridal car. The Cullinan works particularly well for couples wanting a taller, more contemporary Rolls-Royce, while the Silver Cloud gives the modern O2 setting an interesting classic contrast.

For the bridal party or family, our newer-shape Gen 2 Baby Bentley limousine carries up to eight passengers. The Hummer H2 carries up to sixteen and is particularly useful where a larger family group wants to travel together.

For a coordinated wedding, we can combine the main Rolls-Royce with one or more supporting vehicles and plan them as a single transport schedule rather than separate bookings.

How Long Should I Hire the Wedding Cars For?

If you are staying at the InterContinental, getting ready there and holding the whole wedding there, you may not need hours of chauffeured transport. A relaxed one-way arrival or a carefully arranged photographic journey may be enough.

For a church or civil ceremony elsewhere followed by the reception at the InterContinental, three hours is often a sensible starting point, depending on the ceremony location and photography plan.

For longer Indian and Asian wedding schedules, our 6-hour wait-and-return, 8-hour full-day and 10-hour extended full-day packages allow the chauffeur and vehicle to remain committed to the wedding.

We do not price a wedding simply by multiplying an hourly rate. Preparation, chauffeur allocation, positioning the vehicle, waiting time and committing a particular car to your wedding all form part of the booking.

Getting to the Venue

The hotel is on Waterview Drive on Greenwich Peninsula, beside The O2. The location is convenient for North Greenwich and the wider Docklands area, and the hotel has direct pedestrian access towards The O2 as well as strong public-transport connections for guests.

For the wedding cars, we concentrate on the road journey and the event schedule. On major O2 event days the wider Peninsula can become much busier, so tell us if you know a major concert or event is taking place on the same day as your wedding. We can then allow for the conditions rather than discovering them when the bride is already in the car.

Why Experience at a Large Venue Matters

A wedding at the InterContinental O2 is not difficult simply because it is large. In many ways the space makes vehicle movements easier than at smaller historic venues. The challenge is coordination.

When several vehicles, hundreds of guests, photographers, caterers and other suppliers are all working to one timetable, small delays can quickly affect the arrival. Knowing that the Hummer needs more manoeuvring room, that a large family group takes longer to load, or that the couple wants ten minutes with the Phantom before going inside is the kind of detail that matters.

That is why we ask for the real wedding plan rather than just a postcode and a ceremony time.
