A Wedding Venue With Two Completely Different Personalities
Eltham Palace is one of our favourite wedding venues in South East London, and after providing wedding cars here for more than a decade, it still feels special when we bring a bride through the gates.
What makes the venue so unusual is that it is not simply a historic palace and it is not simply an Art Deco mansion. Eltham was a medieval royal residence, with the surviving Great Hall built for Edward IV in the 1470s. Centuries later, Stephen and Virginia Courtauld created their glamorous 1930s home beside it. A wedding can therefore move from the sweeping curves and glass dome of the Art Deco Entrance Hall into a medieval Great Hall with its magnificent hammerbeam roof, then outside into gardens and lawns.
English Heritage can accommodate larger numbers in the Great Hall, but numbers do not really explain the atmosphere. From our own experience, Eltham Palace particularly shines for small and medium-sized weddings where the couple and their guests can really enjoy the intimacy, architecture and grounds rather than feeling lost in a large function space.
The Arrival Is One of the Best Parts of an Eltham Palace Wedding
For us, the arrival is where Eltham Palace becomes particularly memorable.
The palace sits beyond its historic moat and the final approach takes you across a narrow, cobbled bridge onto the turning circle. If you have never brought a wedding car here before, that approach deserves respect. It is not the entrance to a modern hotel with a huge sweeping driveway.
We know that a Rolls-Royce can be taken across because we have been doing exactly that at Eltham Palace weddings for more than ten years. With the right approach, we can bring the car across the bridge and right up to the Palace.
That matters for more than appearance. The bride or groom can step out close to the entrance rather than facing a walk from the main visitor parking area in formal clothes, heels or a large wedding dress. It is a small practical detail that can make the arrival feel much calmer.
It also gives you something rather special photographically: the Rolls-Royce positioned at the Palace itself, with the historic architecture and grounds immediately around it.
Why We Do Not Take Stretched Limousines Across the Bridge
A Rolls-Royce and a stretched limousine should never be treated as though they are the same vehicle simply because both are used for weddings.
The bridge approach at Eltham Palace is narrow and the turning requirements are completely different for a long limousine. We are comfortable bringing our Rolls-Royce cars through because we know the approach and have done it repeatedly. We would not attempt the same manoeuvre with our 8-seat Baby Bentley limousine or 16-seat Hummer.
For a limousine booking, the drop needs to be planned differently. Trying to force a stretched vehicle through an unsuitable historic approach is not impressive wedding transport; it is unnecessary risk.
This is one of those venue details that is difficult to appreciate from a postcode or a photograph. We know it because we have physically driven the route.
The Art Deco Entrance Hall Makes an Extraordinary First Impression
Once inside, the circular Entrance Hall is the part of Eltham Palace that immediately explains why the venue feels so different from other historic houses.
The room was created as part of the Courtaulds' 1930s home and is lined with warm wood, centred beneath a glass dome and wrapped by a curved staircase. English Heritage describes it as a popular place for newly married couples to toast their marriage, with French doors leading directly towards the terrace and flower gardens.
For a smaller wedding, it has a glamorous but surprisingly personal atmosphere. Rather than entering a conventional hotel lobby, guests arrive in a room that feels unmistakably of its period.
The contrast with the medieval Great Hall next door is part of the pleasure of the venue. You can move from sleek 1930s design into a room whose origins go back more than five centuries.
The Great Hall Gives the Wedding Its Sense of History
The Great Hall was built for Edward IV in the 1470s and is one of the great surviving features of the medieval palace. Its elaborate oak hammerbeam roof gives the room enormous character without needing the wedding to compete with it.
Today it can be used for ceremonies, wedding breakfasts, banquets and dancing. English Heritage currently lists capacity for up to 200 for a ceremony or reception and 300 for drinks, and the Hall opens directly onto the lawns.
Those figures mean Eltham Palace can technically host a substantial wedding. Our own view from attending weddings here for years is slightly different: the venue is at its most charming when the couple embraces its intimate, historic character rather than treating it as a substitute for a huge ballroom.
That is an experience-led observation rather than a venue restriction. Couples planning higher guest numbers should discuss layouts and current capacities directly with English Heritage.
Nineteen Acres Give You Far More Than One Photograph
The Palace is surrounded by 19 acres of gardens containing both medieval and 20th-century elements. There is the moat, the medieval bridge, lawns, a rock garden and established planting, as well as the terrace immediately outside the Art Deco rooms.
For wedding photographs, that gives couples an unusual amount of variety without having to leave the venue. The Palace can provide the architectural backdrop, the bridge and moat give a sense of history, and the gardens soften everything with greenery and seasonal colour.
From the wedding-car point of view, one of our favourite opportunities is much simpler: photograph the Rolls-Royce while it is positioned immediately outside the Palace. You get the car and the venue together, rather than a photograph of the car in an anonymous car park.
If those pictures matter to you, tell us before the wedding. We can allow sensible time around the arrival instead of discovering after everybody has gone inside that the photograph was never taken.
A Rolls-Royce Feels Particularly at Home Here
Eltham Palace works beautifully with both modern and classic Rolls-Royce cars because the venue itself combines two eras.
A Phantom or Ghost looks clean and imposing against the 1930s mansion and gives the arrival a contemporary sense of occasion. The Silver Cloud takes the photographs in another direction entirely, complementing the historic setting and creating a more traditional wedding image.
There is no single 'correct' car for Eltham Palace. The more useful question is what you want the photographs and arrival to feel like.
What does matter is that the vehicle suits the access. A Rolls-Royce can be brought right to the Palace in a way that our stretched limousines cannot, and that practical difference should be considered when choosing the transport.
Parking Is Better Than at Many Historic London Venues
One of the practical advantages of Eltham Palace is that there is on-site parking rather than guests having to rely entirely on surrounding streets.
In our experience that makes weddings here considerably easier, particularly for family members and guests arriving from different parts of London, Kent and the South East. English Heritage's current public visitor information describes parking as limited and notes that it can become busy, while older official wedding information referred to a much larger wedding allocation.
For that reason we would not publish a fixed wedding parking capacity as though it were guaranteed for every event. Couples should confirm the parking arrangements reserved for their particular date with the English Heritage venue team.
The important distinction for the bridal car is that normal guest parking and the wedding arrival are not the same thing. Where wedding arrangements allow, the Rolls-Royce can continue across the bridge to the turning circle by the Palace itself.
Wedding Suppliers at a Historic English Heritage Property
Eltham Palace is a protected historic environment, so supplier arrangements are more controlled than at a modern hotel.
English Heritage wedding and event information requires certain services to be provided through accredited suppliers, including areas such as catering and other event production. That is understandable when people are working inside a medieval hall, an important Art Deco interior and protected gardens.
Our advice is to ask the venue team for the current accredited supplier arrangements early in the planning process. Lists and commercial arrangements can change, and it is better to understand the rules before committing to a caterer, florist, lighting company or other supplier.
For transport, we also recommend giving the venue the correct vehicle information rather than simply saying 'wedding car', particularly if more than one vehicle is arriving. A Rolls-Royce and a stretched limousine need completely different plans here.
How Much Wedding Car Hire Do You Actually Need?
Eltham Palace can host the ceremony and reception in the same venue, so some couples will only need a single bridal journey. If you are getting ready at home or a hotel and then remaining at Eltham Palace for the ceremony and celebration, our relaxed one-way wedding hire may be all that is required.
Our one-way wedding hire is not a rushed transfer. We allow sensible time for the bride to leave, for the journey, for the Palace arrival and for photographs with the car before the chauffeur departs.
For a Phantom, Ghost or Silver Cloud, one-way wedding hire is £395.
If you are marrying at a church first and then travelling to Eltham Palace for the reception, our 3-hour church and civil package for the Phantom, Ghost or Silver Cloud is £550 and will often make more sense because the chauffeur can wait through the ceremony and complete the onward journey.

What We Would Recommend for a Typical Eltham Palace Wedding
If your ceremony and reception are both at the Palace, we would begin by looking at the one-way Rolls-Royce option. It gives you the bridal collection, the journey, the close arrival and time for photographs without paying for hours of waiting that you may not use.
If your ceremony is elsewhere, tell us exactly where it is and what time it finishes. We can then work backwards from the Palace arrival and allow for the ceremony, photographs and real South East London traffic rather than estimating the booking from mileage alone.
If bridesmaids or family are travelling in a limousine as well, we will plan that vehicle separately. The Rolls-Royce can make the Palace approach that we know well; the stretched limousine needs a more appropriate drop-off.
Why More Than a Decade of Eltham Palace Weddings Matters
Eltham Palace is a good example of why venue experience matters in wedding transport.
We know how picturesque the Palace is because we have seen the photographs. More importantly, we know what it is like to approach the narrow bridge in a Rolls-Royce, bring the car across, position it at the Palace and give the bride or groom a close arrival without an unnecessary walk.
We also know where experience should make you cautious. Just because the Phantom can cross the bridge does not mean we should try to take a stretched Hummer through the same space.
After more than a decade of weddings here, those decisions are not theoretical. They are part of how we plan the job before the car leaves.

Yes, where the wedding-day access arrangements permit it. We have been taking Rolls-Royces to Eltham Palace weddings for more than a decade and have driven across the narrow bridge onto the turning circle by the Palace. We plan the approach carefully and follow the venue team's instructions.
Can a Hummer or stretched limousine cross the Eltham Palace bridge?
We do not take our stretched limousines across it. The narrow historic bridge and approach are very different for a long vehicle, so the Baby Bentley and 16-seat Hummer need a different drop-off plan.
Will the bride have to walk from the car park to the Palace?
Not when we are able to use the wedding access for the Rolls-Royce. One of the advantages of bringing the car across the bridge is that the bride or groom can be dropped very close to the Palace rather than making the normal visitor walk from the car park.
Is Eltham Palace suitable for a smaller wedding?
Yes. Although the Great Hall can accommodate larger numbers, we particularly like Eltham Palace for small and medium-sized weddings because the Art Deco rooms, Great Hall, terrace and gardens create a contained and intimate atmosphere.
